(PROFILE Of JAKURA MARBLE INDUSTRY LTD )
PROFILE
JAKURA MARBLE INDUSTRY LIMITED is a marble
limestone mining company incorporated in 1968.
The Company has its quarry
located at Jakura, some 50 km off Okene-Abuja road, adjacent to Dangote Cement Plant
while the Corporate Headquarters and the marble processing works are located at
Marine Road, River side, Lokoja, Kogi state, Nigeria
The Company produces high quality
marble limestone of calcium carbonate rich chemical purity suitable for
numerous industrial applications.
Products of the Company are retailed directly
to market outlets in form of lump stones to ceramic industries, pulverized
chippings for floor terrazzo and finer pulverized sizes for glass making and
livestock feeds among other uses.
The high calcium carbonate rich rock can be cut, shaped and
polished as dimension marble works for rooms and office tiles, kitchen and
office counter tops, palladiana, ornamental and monumental products such as
tombstones, altar tables and pulpits.
GEOLOGY OF JAKURA MARBLE DEPOSIT
Jakura marble limestone deposit
is situated in the neighborhood of Lokoja town and represents a flat sheet of
marbles among crystalline schists and gneisses of pre – Cambrian period.
The marble deposit is
extensive with an overburden thickness of between 3.39m and 13.61m and mainly
of unconsolidated materials. Marble thickness is as great as 100m.
The deposit is mainly of
coarse-grained white coloured marble, medium-grained light grey coloured and
fine-grained grey coloured marble and comprises almost only crystalline calcite
of various granularities with small amount of graphite, quartz and mica
inclusions.
The boundaries between the
individual varieties of marble are not well defined.
The coarse–grained white has
scattered graphite while the medium grained marble has higher incorporation of
disseminated graphite, some sulphide mineralization (pyrite chalcopyrite) and
often contains subordinate quarz.
Gneisis is the dominant
country rock underlying the otherwise homogenous marble except for very few
occasional granitic, pegmatic and quartzite and country rock intrusions.
The limestone study showed that as to its
chemical composition it is characterized by high purity.
